What is urea? 

Urea is a moisturising ingredient naturally present in the outer layer of the skin. It forms part of the Natural Moisturising Factor (NMF), a group of substances that help maintain healthy hydration. Around 7-10% of NMF is naturally made up of urea, but the amount gradually decreases with age, making it beneficial to replenish through skincare. 

Why is urea used in skincare?

Urea is one of the skin's most effective humectants. It attracts and retains water within the epidermis, helping maintain hydration, improve skin comfort and support the protective barrier. It also helps reduce transepidermal water loss (TEWL), allowing skin to retain moisture more effectively.
